Why is my load average so high when comp. is idle?

as reported by uptime:
load average: 3.08, 3.02, 3.01
as reported by top:
 09:44:07 up 2 days, 22:57, 3 users, load average: 3.03, 3.01, 3.00
123 processes: 121 sleeping, 1 running, 1 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU0 states: 0.0% user 0.0% system 0.0% nice 0.0% iowait 100.0% idle
CPU1 states: 0.1% user 0.3% system 0.0% nice 0.0% iowait 99.1% idle
vmstat says:
procs memory swap io system cpu
r b w swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id
 0 3 0 111284 12840 197852 738904 0 1 70 52 41 47 1 4 11
man on vmstat say that the 'b' value is the number of processes in uninteruptable sleep, so I'm guessing that's where the load average of 3 is coming from - 3 processes waiting to do something... but what are they? why are they there? How can I find that info?

This machine just went down, btw, because of a raid card failure. The card is still in the machine, but not active (the array is not mounted). I wonder if this could have something to do with it?

If the box was trying to write logs to a defunct RAID controller
that would be something that may put it into wait-state indeed.
