Mounting usb devices under 2.4.x kernels - /dev nodes and mountpoints

Kernel 2.4 versions handle usb devices so that the first connected device becomes sda, second sdb and so on. The problem is that if the order of connecting devices is different on each boot, devices arent at the same /dev node. On this boot my external hd might be sda and on the next it might be sdb or sdc. This means I have to mount usb devices from the commandline passing the corrent mountpoint as a parameter if I want the mountpoint for certain filesystem to be the same every time.

Now I know that in 2.6 kernels it's possible to have a filesystem mounted to a certain mountpoint according to it's label. However I'm not willing to update to 2.6 kernel just yet, so I was wondering if it's possible to make this happen with 2.4 kernel or if there is another way to work around the problem?

Thanks!
