mandrake 9.1 source code

is this included in the three discs? are the linux source codes generally made available on the installation discs or on seperate cd's? is it likely the source code for distributions are available in txt format for download or are they also usually .iso's?

You can download them from the CVS (Mandrake Cooker) I think, they dont have to be shipped with the compiled thing, only available for free.
You get it with the larger packs, eg the PowerPack iirc

so getting the mandrake 9.1 source code is not as simple as going to some url and downloading a .doc?

The source is included on the install CD's. Don't remember which one.

Select from the menu the configuration | install software (I do believe) and select the development package.

I dont think you'll find it's just one doc, it's a set of directories containing .c and .h files, they're text based (not DOS bastardised text format mind you

) but not a .doc for Word - The kernel is written in the C programming language, and compiling it to be able to run the binary version is a bit complicated

I got an 'installation sources' cd with my PowerPack, I guess they arent the kernel sources then

It seems you don't understand what source code is. Source code is not always "plain english". It's usually "code" hence the term source code

You can get the source code if everything they have is GPL or some other similar open source license. It's included in their isos, but the latest "source" is of course cvs. Info for cvs from mandrake is freely available on their website just as the source itself is.
