Talking Linux noob

Hi there

I'm new to the linux world, and just installed Mandrake 9.1 (well last sunday). I have been converted from the crappy OS named Windows XP by a friend who also frequents this forum

I installed Windows 98se first, and then Mandrake. I basically had no problems installing it (only gripe was that it took more or less 1 hour and a half, but what can I expect? Windows 98 took no more than half an hour to install what? The simple, buggy programs which compared to what Mandrake gives should be considered mainly as shite, based upon my perspective, and many others ), and seems to be as functional, and if not even more speedier than Windows XP.

Rebooting to Windows 98, I notice greater overall speed, but at the cost of having to configure everything, for more than half an hour, and at the end what reward do I get? Various errors, from the start when the crappy OS is loading (and I never got them before) to when I try to access the internet explorer. Well at least they're not fatal, for now... But will be when I start cooling off my anger on my poor crappy computer when all of the normal fatal errors will come out from Windows I basically want to use Windows 98 for gaming purposes (mainly for Counter Strike ) and Mandrake for the rest

Give or take I say that Windows 98 will last for a month and a half if not maintained properly, based on my previous experience...

Anyways, Im basically a Linux noob and want to learn how it works (how to use shell, and how to recompile the kernel) because my next great task will be to install the Ati drivers...

Yeah I know that I could have searched before asking, but I wanted to introduce myself, and guessed that asking help (like links) for those two subjects in my introduction thread should not be that tiresome for you

Thanks and see ya

Being a Linux newbie myself, the first thing I learned to do is this:

1) type in your web browser: www.google.com/linux
2) after page loads; create a bookmark for this page
3) whenever you have a question, need an explanation or simply don't know where to start with something just open this page and type your question, phrase or keyword and hit search.

There are tons of sites that contain tons of information about anything you need to know about linux and for one person to give you one web page link there might be 1000 other web pages that will work better for your exact situation.

For example, for the last 1 1/2 weeks I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when my attempt at triple booting Mandrake 9.1, Red Hat 9 and Win XP Pro was failing terribly. I searched on these boards and found some helpful items but after looking through about 100 pages of linux searches I finally found a couple websites that pertained to my exact problems and I was able to complete my task.

Just thought I'd share. :P

Reportedly, Counterstrike works perfectly up to version 1.5, but the "steam" part of 1.6 does not work yet. Transgaming however has said that they're working on that specifically, so that one can play 1.6 under Linux.
