Lilo

How would I install the LILO from Red Hat 6.2, onto my system which is running Red Hat 7.2?

Why would you want to install an out of date version of lilo?

Because I have a program that only works with the version of LILO that comes with Red Hat 6.2.

On the old RH 6.2 machine: /sbin/lilo -V

That will get you the version number. Or, if you don't have that installed anywhere, grab the CD, mount it, and find out by looking at what version is on the RPM.

Installing by RPM would probably make 7.2 go wacko kazoo. Track down that version of lilo: sourceforge, google, freshmeat, somewhere will be an archive. Take the new lilo.conf file, make sure it isn't using any paramaters that have come about recently, the biggest I can think of is an LBA argument, and then compile the ancient lilo from source and install it with the usual:

./configure
make
make install

It might have dependencies on old libs, but I doubt it as its a pretty small and straight forward.

Offhand, what program do you have that's dependant on an ancient LILO?

Cheers,

Finegan

Thanks finegan, I'll try that and let you know how it goes.

The program is StorageSoft ImageCast. It's a disk drive imaging application that my company is using for some network management software.

Careful!

The version of lilo that shipped with Rh 6.2 has the 1024 cylinder limitation, the one that ships with 7.2 does not. If your kernel is currently located above the 1024 cylinder, your box won't boot if you install the older lilo.

I did a /sbin/lilo -V and it said LILO version 21.

The problem is, there are many 21.x versions, and I need to know exactly which one was shipped with Red Hat 6.2. Anyone know?

The application is called ImageCast, by StorageSoft (which is now owned by Phoenix). It's a drive imaging program (ala Ghost). My company is using an API--based on their drive imaging software--as part of our enterprise system management software.
