is my hard disk broke?

i ran partition magic to re-partition my hard.
it was stuck while performing resizing the partition.
after that, my linux started to fail to boot normally.
every time, it fixes hard disk error.
and still fails to start many services and definately X..

error message from partition magic
--------------------
inode ** has illegal block
inode ** is unused but does not have a deletion time set
--------------------

should i repartition & format & install everything?
...
should i buy another hard drive?

thank you..

Do you have a seperate /home partition than you do for your main installation???

If so, you can re-install without destroying your user partitions, and the data in them...

I would re-run the partitioning, but only repartition the /, /var, /usr and swap partitions...

Worry not for your hardrive is ok, I think. But anyway, maybe the easies thing's gonna be for you to install everything again.
How come you were partitioning your hardrive? what were going to install or what did you have in mind?, give us a little more info, thanks

thank you..

i had
/
/boot
/home
/usr
/swap
/data

i wanted to seperate
/usr/local from /usr

and while doing pq-magic, tragic happened....

i'm now installing 8.2
where i leave /home /data untouched
and splitted /usr/local when installation cd asked for partitioning..

does this partition program save data in the partition when performing partition change?
if so, i'd like to use this program instead of pq-magic...

thank you.......

Are you using Mandrake 8.2???

If so, Mandrake's partition program, Diskdrake, is very good at formatting/partitioning things.

Still, probably the easiest thing to do is to re-install, but don't touch your /home partition (unselect it for the partitioning process), make sure you create all the users that exist in the /home partition so that the data can be accessed. When the system comes back up, all that data will be available again and you won't need to re-set all those users.

Partition magic is good but it can't handle everything. Especially, it can't handle journalized file systems like Ext3 and RieserFS. The best thing to do is set your partitions during install. That way you can back up and re-set things easier.
