I don't know what you're trying to install, but today I found two VERY good articles in ctkroeker's sig:

Newbies Check out how to post a question and how to use LQ correctly.

Please read those first, but I'd recommend typing exactly what it says you should type.

Why do you want a script to have an extension?
I don't know what you are installing but the explanation says it crystal-clear:

execute

Code:
./install
Just this, open a terminal, change to the directory with the stuff in it and type the command at the prompt: dot-slash-install
