Info on the Sager 9880

Hey everyone. I've been flooding the fourms for information on how to configure my new comptuer, a Sager 9880. I just wanted to post my info and what i've found. I have been using Mandrake/Mandriva 10.1 and 10.2 le. Here are my specs:
2 x 80GB SATA HDD @5400 (hitachi i think)
Nvidia 6800 Go Ultra Video
7.1 Sound (intel chipset i believe)
Synaptics touch pad w/ scroll bar
1GB DDR2 RAM
Webcam
TV Tuner
1600x1050 Superclear glossy ActMtx Screen wuxga
GB Lan w/ 802.11g internal wireless

I was having a problem off and on w/ the devices using Mandrake 10.1. Some was my own user ignorance, but some was driver issues. Either way. I then upgraded to Mandriva 10.2 LE. Here's what i found:

Harddrives - no problem. MD 10.1/10.2 recgonized them off the start. No problems here. Sda/Sdb

Video - No problem. in MD 10.1, the kernal needed to be updated and the driver downloaded and installed from Nvidia, otherwise easy-sleazy-nice-and-cheesy. MD 10.2 LE detected it and installed the drivers and modules during install. Comlpete w/ splash screen.

LCD - set to LCD 1600x1050. Both 10.1/.2 worked fine here too.

7.1 Sound - didn't install driver in 10.1. Had to hunt for them. in 10.2, sees the sound card and loaded the driver. Haven't tested yet.

Touchpad - no problem, works better than my windows. The scrool bar works fine.

Webcam - no drivers loaded. will need to hunt. Both versions

TV Tuner - recgonized the device in control center hardware. Have yet to test it. May need myth.tv

GB Lan - no problem

Wireless - This was fun. In 10.1 it didn't see it. Its a Ralink 2500, the linux module is rt2500. Ralink has good drivers and documentation and comes w/ a utility. I got it loaded in 10.1, but couldn't configure it using the utility. It wanted "supper user privilages" (yes its spelled supper. LOL. "A" for effort). At this point, I started using 10.2 after having problems w/ this device. In 10.2, the module was installed and loaded. All you had to do is configure. My computer locked up here though. Multiple times. Have yet to work out why. Will post back w/ reason.

I am an extreme noob. I love this and am learning as i go. But this is big news for me and i recieved alot of help from the community here. I just wanted to pass on what little i know.

Cheers

ok. i reinstalled mandriva 10.2 because of the lockups when configuring the wireless. Lockups i didn't experiance in 10.1. I was able to configure the wireless during inital setup during install. It didn't connect but at least it didn't lock up. I booted into the OS as a user (where i found that the wireless didn't connect). I tried to re-configure the settings. After 2 attempts with no lockups, when i got tired of configuring encryption, i disabled encryption in the settings and while doing that disabled encryption in my router. I noticed that the computer locked up again. There seems to be a driver issue with the MD default driver. I would have installed the manufacturer's driver last night, but freaking adelphia has their head up their backside again and we didn't have i-net service. Other than that....will be back later.

I have a RaLink 2500 chipset based wifi card and Mandriva 10.2 as well and am finding it extremely hard to configure. No matter what I try, and how many settings I specify, nothing helps.

Hey punkrwaker,

You and me both. May that you can refer to my other post http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=341900 and some of that will help you. You'll also get an idea of what a beast this wireless is.

**Update to sound: I've tested it and it works fine. I don't believe i'm getting the full 4.1 or not, but at least i have sound.

Cheers
