I am not concerned about their well being let alone their health. They are attempting to scam someone and deserve anything they get to stymie the scam.
Get real!
I'm very serious. There are some Verses in the Bible that deal with things like this...
I'm inclined to agree with you but the courts might not! If you look at the link Ardvark posted, you will see that the lady concerned was fined a large sum of money for what she did.
...Which was also in Germany, not where you live. And there are probably 1,000 other suits that were lost. Sorry, I'll risk it. I'll counter sue for whatever I want, and tie up in court for years...And regardless, they'll never see a penny from me. Scammers are criminals...Get hurt committing a crime? Too bad
Nothing like throwing a religious dead cat into a discussion to kill the party.
Go gitter done Tbone and Onebuck. I raise your/those links with a eye for a eye.
And a whipping from JESUS with a bull whip at the market selling sacrifices.
Edit: Back on topic. In my one horse town. If someone rings my door bell with a pamphlet and collection pan. Asking for money saying they represent disabled veterans. All I gotta say is "let me see your city permit issued allowing you to ring my door bell".
Lots and lots of scammers here in the wild wild west.

Yep..amazing how there didn't seem to be anything in the bible readings about things like not stealing, not lying, etc.

To me, if you're committing a crime, you're taking risks/chances. You want to take such chances? Then that means you assume the risks...want to be safer? Don't be a criminal.
Our neighborhood is fairly safe, even though we're right on the outskirts of the city proper. Why? Criminals have learned MANY lessons over the years, and we have complained vigorously to the local police, and they upped patrols.

I don't ask for a permit, but I do ask to see their paperwork about the charity, and pull out my phone and try to look it up. AMAZINGLY, most of them don't exist. As soon as you ask them things like "What's your 501c3 standing?", "Where is your charity incorporated?", etc., they move on.

Huh..anything in there about:
Not stealing? (such as the scammer trying to steal money?)
Not bearing false witness (as in, representing your 'company' as something it's not?)
I'm fairly certain there's something in there about those topics. I think you could do to remember Matthew 6:1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven."
I have found Caller-ID to be the best solution for me. I don't answer calls unless I know the caller, period. If it's important, they will leave a message. I'm still amazed by how important it is that they do leave messages to help me lower my interest rates! The end result is that I am far less frustrated and I waste much less time than when I used to answer a ringing phone.

Agreed...but even if I don't know the number, I'll answer it after 4 rings, if it's in my state, just because I don't know if a friend may need help/whatever, and is calling from a different number. I only answer after 5 rings, since if it's a scammer/telemarketer, they typically hang up after 4 rings, so they DON'T get answering machines (that costs them money). Even then...I don't say "hello".
Why? The robo-dialers are set to pick up that word, THEN connect you to someone. I pick up the phone and say "Salutations"...if a person is there, they talk. If not...I get silence, and the knowledge that it WAS a robo-dialer..and hang up.
I do not answer calls from "Caller Unknown," "Private Caller," or "Unknown Name," nor will I answer calls from toll-free numbers (800-, 888-, etc., in the States). I figure that, if they really want to talk to me, they'll leave me a message. If they can't be bothered to do that, I can't be bothered to talk with them.

German court. I would like to see some reference from my locale or at least within our court system. I do not think it would fly here in the U.S.
I still stand by the signal limitations for our phone systems that would prevent someone from hearing damage due to attenuation(3) unless the scammers system does amplification. Even with amplification it would be just signal magnitude not frequency.
We had a chap on Linux Forums (he probably comes here too) who did the same sort of thing on a regular basis. He used to try and see how long he could spin it out for.

Sorry, the mislocation of this thread is entirely my fault. I frequently get confused between "General" and "Linux - General". Put it down to old age. I intended to post this in General and not in a technical forum and I think most of the responders have recognised that. Though I agree that the religious diversion is not very relevant to the problem of how to recognise scams. We have a separate thread for that kind of thing.
My mod statement is directed to others who are causing direct drift of the topic by not posting constructively or on topic and violating LQ Rules . Not you. Valid thread topic here in Linux - General for your Linux related scam topic.
Scams have been around because they make money for the crooks. They prey on fear, greed and even good intentions. They don't often do well against wary foes.
I answer the phone like a small child voice. Then when they ask for my parents I grab the whistle and let them have it. hahahahahahaha
Glad Hazel figured it out before being scammed.
I report do not call to state and federal but the crooks have bypassed the caller id system so you can't trust that.
There was a product that would intercept the phone call and demand the caller enter a passcode before letting it ring in house. You'd give out passcodes to known callers and let the rest go to mail box.
