I lose some of my menu editor entries when reinstalling

I had to reinstall MEPIS today after accidentally wrecking the system while trying to recompile the kernel. This and every other recent time I've reinstalled, I've been unable to preserve all my menu entries and their hotkeys (made in Kmenuedit), even when I click "preserve data in /home" in the MEPIS liveCD installation.

What happens every time is that some of the menu entries--I think the ones I made most recently--disappear; and, oddly, their hotkeys stay in the "khotkeysrc" file in /home/[user]/.kde/share/config . The result is that even though the hotkeys' targets are gone, the hotkeys remain unavailable until I manually remove them from khotkeysrc (open up the file and delete their entries).

Since saving the /home folder during reinstallation evidently is not enough, what can I do?

It seems that some of the changes that you make are system wide while others are specific to your account. Find out what configuration files contain the changes that don't survive a reinstallation and copy them. These are most likely to be configuration files in the /etc directory tree. You might try copying the entire /etc directory tree before reinstalling, then after the reinstallation put those file back. Make sure that you preserve file ownership and permissions.
