Help with sound

I am running Slackware 9.1, kernel 2.4.22. I would like to listen to CDs on linux rather than connecting my speakers up to my CD player. I don't know what sound card I have. In Eterm, when I press backspace and there is nothing to delete, it sends a beep to the speakers when I have them plugged in. Is there a way that I could have XMMS do the same with MP3s/CDs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you try to play an MP3 using XMMS? Do you get an error or it plays but you don't head anything?

I am also having trouble with xmms in Redhat 9. when i try to play mp3s, it always comes up with an error:

Quote:
Couldn't open audio!
Please check that:

1. You have the correct output plugin selected.
2. No other programs is locking the soundcard.
3. Your Soundcard is configured properly
But, after I close that message, if I click play again, sometimes the song will play. It happens every time. What can I do?

I get an error. "Please check that: 1. You have the correct output plugin selected 2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard 3. Your soundcard is configured properly"

Edit: Also, to the Eterm I run it from, XMMS reports: "** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device".
