Gentoo

ok I have installed gentoo, but it seems none of the commands that I am use work with Gentoo. I also do not have the networking working in gentoo and the configuration is the same as my redhat config. Is there a place I can get more precise info along with a little trouble shooting help? The Gentoo documentation is good on the install but after that I feel it falls short. can anyone help?

During the Gentoo install it tells you to setup networking - did it work then? If it worked then, and you followed the instructions accurately, then it should still be working. Perhaps you forgot a step, like copying resolv.conf? You can always go back to the instruction manual and repeat the relevant steps. Providing exact errors would help us help you.

As for further documentation, check out the user docs section of the Gentoo website:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml

What documentation are you missing? Can you give a specific example of something that you need but cannot find? Have you tried Google?

Good luck,
Mark.

When I set up the networking I did it at school getting an IP from a DHCP server. At home I statically set the IP's example

Gentoo Box
IP 192.168.72.3 Broadcast 192.168.72.255 Netmask 255.255.255.0

other Box
IP 192.168.72.2 Broadcast 192.168.72.255 Netmask 255.255.255.0

both network cards are up and running. I can ping the Gentoo card from inside gentoo but nothing after that.

Like I said this is the same setup when I bootinto redhat and it works there

Did you remember to copy across your resolv.conf ? This is in the Gentoo installation instructions : section 6.a

Also check if you added an entry for a default gateway.

my resolv.conf has only my schools DNS servers for when I take my computer to school. Other than that it is empty. I access internet through a proxy server on the other box. This has worked time after time in RedHat but this is only for internet.

I have two boxes connected directly together with a crossover cable. With networking setup on both I should be able to ping from Gentoo system but I can't. In Redhat I have the same setyup and it works.

As for the gateway I will check on it but I should not need it as I did not have it before and it worked.

I appreciate all the suggestions you guys have given me.

Here is a tip

Do you need to use a proxy on the gentoo box to see the web, if you do u should enable it through kde or whatever desktop manager you are using, if u havent got to that point in the install yet, u can enable these commands within a terminal, this has to be done in every terminal that you run, if u read the installation handbook, it has information about how to boot up with this config.

use http_proxy="http://yourproxy.com:80"
then for ftp use ftp_proxy="$http_proxy" all this command does is tell the system to use the specified http proxy for ftp requests.

hope this helps
