General XrandR question regarding -q parameter

According to the man page on xrandr,

"-q, --query
When this option is present, or when no configuration changes are requested, xrandr will display the current state of the system."

I have a strange issue where when I pass the -q parameter it does adjust the resolution of the machine, and at other times it does not. Is this expected behavior? The system in question is as follows:

Lenovo Thinkcentre M92p
Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Intel i5 3470
Intel HD4000 (Using the i915 kernel module)
4GB RAM
2 x Viewsonic VA2246m-LED, 1 is connected via VGA, the other is connected DisplayPort to DVI cable.

The VGA connected monitor is the one I have issues with, sometimes it will come up as 1024x768 and other times it will come up native resolution 1920x1080. When it does come up 1024x768 and I issue xrandr it will change to native resolution, a second issue of the command will change it back(1024x768). When I run xrandr -q to find the supported modes, this also changes the resolution sometimes, as in not consistent at all.

Upon rebooting you can see that xorg is spitting out errors about EDID information, invalid checksum remainder is 128.
