Gave up Debian, got slackware

Hi,

SOme of you might have already read my previous Debian posts. Well after numerous tries i still couldn't get X to work. I gave slackware 8.1 a try. After the installation i ran xf86config once and it worked beautifully.

Compared to the Debian ISO i downloaded, slackware's one has a lot more UPDATED packages included. It came with KDE3.0.1 as well. I installed that but was a little unhappy about the number of apps that got installed as well. I chose no to install Netscapee during the installation but i found it in KDE's menu.

Any i've got a sound problem. WHen KDE started up i got the message:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I have a Creative Labs SB Live! sound card. And i don't think i have loaded the right module. WHat should i do?

Another question is that how can i remove KDE completely? I plan to install blackbox soon, so i want to remove anything that i don't use. How? And i also want to remove the packages that came with KDE 3.0.

Debian stable gets updated infrequently - however it is very very very very very stable.

Make sure you have permission to write to the sound device. Under Debian this is a case of:

Code:

adduser username audio

then logining in again. Then

Code:

modprobe emu10k1

to try to load the SB Live driver.

What bsetbg problem? You haven't mentioned it at all in this thread until now. (At least as far as I can tell)

1) Slack doesn't configure sound for you, but just about everything else these days:

modprobe emu10k1
dmesg

If your soundcard is at the end of dmesg, then that's cool.

chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer

To have the module loaded every time. Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and un-comment, or simple add the line:

/sbin/modprobe emu10k1

2) pkgtool, With that you can remove KDE by the chunks. There are quite a few and I recommend leaving in QT as quite a few packages you may want to install after that are based on it.
