Question Disk Archiving/Imaging

Does anyone have any suggestions/comments on using Linux as an alternative to Symantec Ghost on NTFS workstations? I read an article about this sometime ago and can't seem to find it now. I believe it was for Windows 98/FAT32 though. I'm thinking of setting up linux recovery partitions to backup and restore the NTFS partitions on user workstations. Sure, a commercial product like ghost would be easier...but that's no fun! Would tar or dd be any good for this(especially on NTFS)? Has anyone used partimage(www.partimage.org)? I'd like to do some testing/benchmarking on various tools when I have the time, but any thoughts or suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!

partimage

www.partimage.org
it's just like ghost or drive image, but in my opinion, better. and it's FREE! it's linux based, so you can make a custom boot diskor cd. 2 boot disks or a bootable cd can be downloaded from the website. i've used the bootable cd to backup win98SE and WInXP (NTFS) and both restored perfectly.

drive image pro (from powerquest) works fine win NT based systems, probably ok for any NTFS now, but it's not free.
