Customizing your keyboard in RH9

Where DO you customize your keyboard in the RH9 standard Gnome desktop? More specifically, how do I add AltGr (Right Alt key) as a modifier key on an american keyboard layout?

The problem is this: I am swedish and I have a swedish keyboard, but as a long-time LaTeX addict I've grown accustomed to using an american keyboard layout, since many special characters needed frequently when editing LaTeX are in very awkward positions on a swedish keyboard.

The problem of course is that there are no characters åäö in an american keyboard layout. I used to have a custom xmodmap file that mapped F10, F11, F12 to å, ä, ö. Apart from never being a really good solution in the first place, this mapping was apparently rendered dysfunctional when I recently upgraded from RedHat 7.1 to 9. F10, F11, F12 still produces 'å', 'ä', 'ö', but Shift-F10 etc won't produce capital letters. Also, the VT switching via Ctrl-Alt-Fx won't work with this old solution.

What I'm thinking of doing now is to use the Right Alt key as a modifier (the way it works on a swedish keyboard to produce characters like @, \, etc) to produce å, ä, ö together with the corresponding keys on a swedish keyboard, i.e.
AltGr-[ = aring
AltGr-; = odiaeresis
AltGr-' = adiaeresis
AltGr-{ = Aring
AltGr-: = Odiaeresis
AltGr-" = Adiaeresis

How do I set this up? I've tried doing 'xmodmap -pke > xmodmap.custom', editing this file (i.e. 'keycode 34 = bracketleft bracketright aring Aring'), and feed the results back to xmodmap, but these changes don't have any effect and I seem to be stuck with Shift as the only modifier key, which means strictly two characters per key.

Can anybody help?
