RTCW flamethrower problem

So i'm playing the single player mission and i encounter the flamethrower for the first time. Everytime i try to get near it my whole X locks up. I can ctrl-alt-backspace out to kill X. It is almost like it gets stuck in a loop, because the sound starts repeating.

My Xorg log shows nothing helpful. I'm running Fedora 2, with the newest Nvidia drivers. I've tried reinstalling the game several times, made sure it is the newest version. It works fine in XPsp2.

Any ideas???

Distro: Fedora 2 Kernel: 2.6.5-1.358
AMD 64 3500, 1gig ram, GeForce4 Ti 4200, onboard sound -> snd_via82xx
