Quake 3, SUSE 10, ATI

I just got back in to working with Linux again so I thought it would br good practice to load up Quake 3.

I'm using Suse 10 w/KDE, an ATI Radeon 9000, and I'm trying to load up the point release 1.32b. I've updated SUSE using their autoupdate utility which put me on Kernel version 2.6.13 and I've installed the proprietary ATI driver version 8.20.8. Xorg version is 6.8.2. 3D seems to be enabled although from what I've read, the frames per second isn't great: 1750 FPS from the glxgears info.

Basically, I get to watch the nice video in the beginning...but that's all. It would appear the menu does work but all I see is a black screen. I can hear the menu selection if I move the mouse or use the arrow keys and I can back out of Q3 buy methodic usage of the ESC, Enter, and arrow keys.

The point release installer seems to work okay but does give a warning about kbuildsycoca not being able to register with DCOP--means nothing to me.
ATI installer works fine...I used default options on any of the more advanced options.
One thing that's odd in the q3 console is a missing file error (menudef.h).

I have two machines with the same vid cards and O/S and both have the problem. I'm guessing user error, but any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I would guess that is is exactly your problem. menudef.h probably has information defining what is displayed for the menu. If you know what the menu layout is, try using the keyboard to start a game. If it launches into the game with no trouble you are good to go. The other next would obviously be to track down a copy od menudef.h and put it where it goes/compile it/do whatever needs to be done with it...

I'll see what I can come up with. I had to pack up the box I was testing with and it may be a while before I get to upack it. Hmmm...I see an unsuspecting laptop that may need to lose an NTFS partition or two...

Thanks for the feadback. I'll post again with results as soon as the opportunity strikes.
