Could anyone give me some advice as to which Distro would be the best for 3d gaming.
I think I'm done with Mandrake10 for the task ....... Seeings that one has to compile the kernel just to get the drivers to work. Way too much for your new Linux user, at least using this Distro. I've also had flakery occurences with it. Passwords not being accepted, Internet connection on one bootup and not on another bootup, automatic changin of my host name, powering down sometimes and not others.... just strange stuff... even after updates and packages installed updates again and yet, no errors being displayed. Nobody wants this especially with the idea that Linux is the stablest OS out there. I just don't want to be pulling out my hair just to get my computer to run my games. Yes, like in W..........
So on that violin's note back to the question. Which would be the best gaming flavour out there.... Something with some trial and error, time tested.

Mandrake 9.1
I haven't used Mandrake 10 so I can't speak for that. Mandrake 9.1 was easy for gaming. I just installed my ATI drivers (Radeon 9700 Pro) and I was up and running playing games like Unreal Tournament 2004, Far Cry (via WineX) and Enemy Territory. My Enemy Territory plays much better in Linux than in Windows XP. I plan on getting Doom 3 when it comes out and playing it on Linux.
interesting answer.. I had been setting up Mandrake10 beside a friend who had M 9.1 on his system..... and I trying to build a kernel head strong on being able to do it. defeated or at least am holding off on it.
so in goes Mandrake 9.1 and and and .................... no x eviroment.
can't get it to run. can't do much in init 3 and init 5 just won't work.
urpmi -x tells me I need a whole list of things ..... but to actually get then to install ........ Nothing. Is they're any other suggestions as to which linux distro I could use to run my 3d games. Does it exist where you'd install a linux flavour, insure a net connection , update a graphics driver , install the game and away you go. cus I tell ya I'm have problems doing the simplest of tasks.
my motherboards ( MSI)set to free jumper mode
the harddrive (maxtor) is on ide cable 1 the Rom on ide 2
I always do a full install
in theory I shouldn't be having any problems.
If I could get a distro without problem this would be nice. All I really ask it to do is play 3d games , I don't think I'm asking very much. oh I'd like to check my mail with it to .. but I never could get that to work even using M10
