Any way to get "Alice"; "Call of Duty" series and "Descent 3" to work?

Hi again. I'd like to get some games going, but wine doesn't seem to work, either that, or I have the configuration all wrong.
As for Alice and Call of Duty 2, I get up to "installing files" when it shows errors.
Descent 3 installed, but after hitting "play" it says "needs cd 1", even though I have it in there.
I want to get all I can under one Operating System (mandrivalinux 2006; KDE 3.4).
The more I can get under one OS, the better.
Thanks.

Have you tried Cedega? It's configured especially for games.

No I haven't, but that cost money, right? Don't think I'm cheap, but right now, I have no money, unemployed, and getting money is getting a lot harder now.
Is there some list I can look at? I'd like to be pretty sure I can play these games before spending any sort of money and only finding out it won't work.
It doesn't slow down the pc, does it? I noticed wine did that. It seemed a little slower, slight delays in doing things, nothing too big, but I noticed something.

I see it's $5.00 a month, but is that if you just want to be some member? You don't have to keep paying if you just have the software right? I can't imagine one paying every month for just having the software.
right now, with no job and so little income, I can't use it, but I'll keep that in mind.
thank you very much.

that site was working once shooter, and now I just can't get in it at all.
I did get some cash, and decided to get cedega.
I saw their games database list and saw those three games I listed.
however, once I installed the software, I only see a small list. Do I have to add my own games into the database or what?
I'm trying Alice now, being it's the only one listed as of now in the software it installed.

As for the payment, I'm sick, with a headache, and a bit spaced out, so maybe I'm wrong.
I thought it said "first payment in three months", it even mentioned, Sept 19th.
however, it charged me right away.
In any case, I hope it's worth it.
It installed Alice, so now I'll see what's up.

update: After trying wine, I was a bit nervous and not too confident in having something work while using linux. no offense about linux. I'm just still pretty new to this, and rarely know the right config to get things to work.
I was quite impressed with cedega, as far as "American McGee's Alice" go, being it's the only one I could test out yet.
Everything seemed to work, the intro, the sound, both in voices, action sounds, video, everything. I didn't notice anything to be missing. It was a nice smooth full screen picture.
Thanks! Now if I can see if I can get "Call of Duty 2" and "Descent 3" to work under this.
If I can, this will have quite an impact on linux, in a good way.
thanks again!

second update: I found out one reason why I couldn't get call of duty 2 to go. In the "Game folder" section, I put /home/jeremy/call of duty 2.
After getting Alice to go, I saw right away that I entered "COD2" wrong.
Anyways, COD2 is giving me an error. I switched the settings to read as "winxp", but I still get an error that states:

"1607: Unable to install Installshield Scripting Runtime"

I don't have Descent 3 at the moment, but plan to buy it again soon, once I get a job. As for now, it's just trying to see if I can get COD2 to run.
hmm. what I fear is that the database shows ratings, and for COD2, it says "playable", and no stars.
I'm fearing the worse right now, being that's THE game I want to run, more than any other.

COD2 isn't supported yet. Maybe it will in the next couple of months.

I sure hope so. It's just one of those games that I still enjoy playing from time to time.

I sure hope so, meaning, within a couple months, that would really be great.
I knew what you meant, that's why I simply said, i sure hope so,

I will be getting Descent 3 (windows) in the mail very shortly, a few days or so.
Some questions, is it easy to use the 1.4 patch to patch up the game or do I need "wine" or something else to install this patch?
Does anyone know if D3 even works using cedega and if so, can you play this online?
I understand there's a loki version of Descent 3, but I had some problem with it, at least with suse 10.0.
Just in case there's a problem, I'd like to be able to at least play it online, that's why I bought the windows version.
If fails, I'll use windows XP to get the game going.

So basically the questions are:

Can Descent 3 be played online using Cedega?
How do I patch it to 1.4?

As for Call of Duty 2, reading the offical manual, I'm convinced there is some sort of COD2 for linux.
This COD2 is the DVD manual, although, I'm sure the regular is the same exact.
On page 13, I see this:

Computer icon: Shows wheather the server is Windows or Linux, and if it is a Listen or dedicated server.

I also saw some patch on PlanetCallofDuty that's for a linux server.
It doesn't make sense for the server alone, to have some linux patch, and a server up and running with no linux players. If they have one up, you know someone has to be on linux, using this.
That's what bothers me. Why did the manual and this site mention linux, linux players, if there is no support in running the game under linux?

Quite a few games build their dedicated software software to run on both platforms as alot of hosting companies use both. The clients however generally only get made for Windows.

I would suggest searching cedega for descent 3.

As for the patch, it'll likely be a windows executable (.exe) if all it does is replace files, yo ucould patch it on windows then copy the directory over?

not possible. I don't have a windows operating system. I think "wine" did it, but wine seems to slow down the computer some.
