x window with debian (potato)

Dear All,
I am in a lot of confusion about the distributions of linux.
Why they are so varied? I had installed RH linux 6---7.1 without any problem. Even the x window is cutely installed.

1) But, when I tried this debian (potato) distro my x window is not setting up. Don't know why, even after trying many options of video cards etc. The same x window problem is there when I tried it with Caldera Open linux 3.1.
To my surprise Caldera and debian has same x window installation method. And both dont work properly.

My machine conf is P-II 350, 64 mb RAM, 440ZX board, SiS6326(4mb video ram), Creative sound blaster, ATX

2) Whenever I say shutdown -h now it shuts down the machine. but switch off is not happening. I have to manually switch off my ATX ? (I tried Caldera Openlinux 3.1xxx, debian(potato). Both of these distros dont switch off the machine. But RH do it too sincerely.)

Can anybody please suggest me something ?
Thanks
Rajesh.

For switching off the machine you probably need to recompile your kernel or use another one.Debian potato uses 2.2.19 or 20 as defaultkernel.Powermanagment might not be included there.I use kernel 2.4.18;switches off nicely.
For the xserver try to configure it with xf86config.I did have trouble with the debianconfiguration but that worked for me.
