want to update

well i really don't need to update my distro, suse 9.1.
however i am getting more comfortable with the command line and want somehting that is a bit more standard.

suse was nice for being a great start to linux. it was fairly complete, except the missing gcc, make and kernel sources.

anyways i am looking for somehting that is complete, fairly standard, and works well. i have had too many issues with FC as of late. bad installs and such. mandrake is good but i have had some issues there. i like debian, but i know it is still "in development" so that might cause some issues. however i hear great things about slackware and others.

my biggest concern is that most of the tools are there for installing stuff from source. however i would prefer that stuff like X and KDE are already installed and working. I want to get more comfortable with the command line and learn linux better. however i don't think i am ready to do a linux install from scratch.

Slackware has all the stuff you need. Just get all the install isos and you will have Gnome, KDE and other environments/managers.

Debian is still in development!!! What are you talking about??? There are three different stages: stable, test, unstable. Maybe you are looking at the unstable and think it is still in development. Try Woody if you want stable or you can always check out either Sig/Serge.

On the other hand, you can try Knoppix 3.7 which can run directly from a CD or you can install it on your harddrive. It comes with almost everything except a kitchen sink!

Hello, jabberwock486!
I used Suse 9.1 Pro until recently. With all the respect to Suse team I tried to Install 9.2 to continue line so to speak. You are welcome to read the review I posted of my "luck" with 9.2
That's how I came to Slackware. To tell the truth I wish it were sooner. Now I do not even think of SuSE. I tried many of distros but Slack beats them all. Believe me, you won't find more rewarding experience!
