I recently downloaded a Slack Live edition which is 190 odd MB, but is a fully functional Linux version. It runs totally from CD.
What I noticed is that compared to my Mandrake 9.1 install, it was ridiculously speedier. So much so, that I was thinking of getting Slack (the complete iso) .. can anyone tell me..
Was my speed increase more likely to be the fact that I was using a mini version... or that Slack is simply faster than Mandrake?
Its because Slack runs a lot less services than Mandrake. You can make your mandrake box just as fast by removing unneeded services, but the easier thing is to get Slackware, and see the light.
Heres why I say that its not because its a mini CD. Runing from a CD is 5x slower than the hard drive, so any advantage from having a smaller distro (ie. less services running), would have been canceled out from the slow media. So its just Slack your feeling.
