startx with slack-like Live-cd

The 'Readme' file on Slackware 9.1 cd#2 says it could boot
as live cd with X and everything. However it won't happen and 'startx' doesn't work for me either - "No such command" (??). What did I miss?
I Just want to try the look and feel prior to installing it over/aside RH9.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. When i type startx nothing happens, or when i type init 4 it says something like kde or gnome is not installed.

I am not sure that this can be done, allthough I never read the README There is not even an X-based install to my understanding.

But to give some info on the look and feel it is going to be mostly the same. Depending on what you run Gnome / KDE or what-not. Gnome and KDE are still Gnome and KDE no matter what OS you use (some minor diffs.). However you will lose some of your GUI Based tools that you have used in Red-Hat 9. I was a Red-Hat user but I only made it to 7.3. I would say switching to Slack is a good choice and I am sure you will be happy. I will poke around and see if I can help you out anymore.

init is right, Slackware Installation CD2 is bootable but its not a live linux distribution. Havent u mistaken it for SLAX? Slax is a live linux cd based on slackware.

A couple of lines from the Readme file:
Welcome to the Slackware Linux 9.1 CD, disc 2!
----------------------------------------------
Here's what you'll find on this disc:
...This is the famous Slackware self-booting Linux CD-ROM -- a complete Slackware Linux installation that runs directly from the CD-ROM with no installation necessary. On most machines, you'll be up and running a Linux system (including X) in seconds...

What do you recon?

Slackware 9.1 CD2 is indeed a Live disc. You can boot to a root session and run mc. It does not, however, have any X tools. It is console only.

I've used CD#2 as a rescue disk, if one happens to "fubar" the /etc/fstab
you can use VIM to edit it and get yourself booting normally.

That's exactly what I use CD2 for. Had to do it yesterday in fact. Not crazy for VIM though. I prefer mcedit for small chnges.

Thanks guys, I'll run SLAX first, then go through the full installation.
