I have downloaded the entire directory for SuSE 9.0 and have put it on a local ftp server. When I try to install it, it does connect to the ftp server, load the RAM image, etc, but gives this error:
"Cannot read package data from installation media: Media error?"
Could not read package data. Did you download just all the rpms? or did you download the entire directory called 9.0 from the server. Because it needs every little text file and whatsit thingamabobs to work for the install...
I had downloaded the entire 9.0 directory from a mirror.
Today, I compared the entire directory to the one on ftp.suse.com and only 2 source rpms were our of sync (i.e. their sizes were different). All other files were correct.
But even before starting, the installation complains within a couple of seconds. It sure couldn't have checked all the files in all subdirectories in 2 or 3 seconds.
I have exactly the same problem. I have successfully installed Mandrake, Red Hat, Vector, all from hard drive, but am completely stuck with SUSE 9.0 at the point in YaST where it says that "Cannot read package data from installation media. Media error?". But if I go into files tab (in the same YaST) I can see everything on the hard drive, which means it is accessible.
What its not finding is the files in the very first directory.. the ones called things like.. autorun.inf, changelog, copying, copyright, directory.yast, index, liesmich, md5sums, readme, gpgpubkeys...
It also needs a directory called "setup" as it contains the setup scripts and the slideshow pictures...
Caeda, You are great!!! Thanks a million. You solved my problem. Just to confirm what I did: As you said, I only needed to download ***ALL*** the files in the very first directory (I did download some that I thought were "important", but not all of them). I don't know which one did the trick but that's not really important. Again, thank you so much.
sermat.
Solved the problem. I installed over NFS this time and with the same files, there was no problem at all... Seems to be some problem with the ftp install.
I had the same problem when I tried to login to my FTP server with a username and password. It did not work and I got the Media error. But with anonymous login it worked. Now Suse 9.0 runs perfectly on my laptop.
