how do i send mail??

i am just using sendmail at local area network is this right??
1.)service sendmail start
2.)mail root@ipaddress <-- of the receiver?

humm
i am using linux sendmail..for now i dont have any DNS and i am just using sendmail just for a local area network but i dont know how to send mail to a local area network but i have configured the server already. i dont know how to send mail to my local PC's.do i use there ip adresses?
ex. mail root@192.168.101.162 <----is this right?
