Im A total Linux Newbie But The Thought Of Building up A Linux System Excites Me , I Was considering Gentoo , But I Was Going To Ask For Reccommendation First .
1: Is This A Wise Choice>?
2: Is There A Lot Of Users On This Forum Who Use Gentoo And Can Help Me Overcome * My Undoubtably Loads* Of Problems?
As Much Feedback as Possible Would Be Greatly Appreciated
And Also Any Hints In The Process Of Setting Up Gentoo Also.
gentoo is super. i am pretty much a linux newbie, i guess, and i love gentoo. the mailing list is very helpful, i sugest you check out the newbie and user lists. good luck!
burzmali i know this isa newbie question..coz i am a newb..but what is the exact commandas used to create and setup the partitions needed under linux and what software do u need? any help fast would be gr8ly appreicated
:smash: :smash: :smash:
to make a partition for linux, use fdisk. if you boot from the gentoo cd, type 'fdisk /dev/hdX' with out the ' and where X is the drive letter of the disk you wish to make room for linux on. ie- /dev/hda for the first hard drive, etc. if you have data on the disk you don't wish destroyed, back it up before booting the gentoo cd and trying to make linux partitions. if you need help in fdisk, type m for a list of commands, it is pretty self explanatory. also if you make a mistake in fdisk, exit it by pressing q and none of the changes you made will be used. the partition type for linux partions is 83, and be sure to include a swap partition with type 82. the swap doesn't need to be very big if you have lots of ram. i have 512 mb ram and a ~350 mb of swap, and my swap hardly ever gets used, even during large compiles. i think that pretty much covers it. hope this helps. let us know if you have any more ?'s.
almost forgot:
after you make your partitions, you need to format them. use 'mke2fs /dev/hdX#' where X# is the drive letter and partition number you wish to format. this will create an ext2 partition (the de facto linux file system format) if you use a -j option with it you will have ext3. what ever format you use, be sure to include support for it in your kernel.
the partition type for linux partions is 83, and be sure to include a swap partition with type 82.
How am i meant to tell the computer that i want the 0x82 partition? can some1 give me exact detailed commands..so i can give them a shot.
Also when partitioning ..i get really weird stuf i dont know about , something about 37792 cylinders or something....thatsall i get asked when making partitions........help
m really sick of winblows and i know this requires work but the work i out in dont seem to get me anywhere..
