$LFS "less" acting funny

After install ($BLFS) glib apm & mc, then updating/installing /etc/issue,
/etc/inputrc & ~/.vimrc the program less started to act funny. Heres what
it is doing. If I do a "ls -l | less" it will show the files but before the file
names there will be a ESC in a grey box and all of the color options for
"ls" is gone.

Has anybody have this happen to them? The only thing I can figure out is
that "less" is broken now. Thanks for any help.

I found the answer to my question, or should I say someone on another mail-list was able to give me the answer.

Here is what caused the problem:

ls is set as "ls --color" and when it is piped to 'less', it can not handle the color option without it being set with the -r option on less "less -r".

This is how I fixed it:

I put these in my ~/.bash_profile

alias ls='ls --color'
alias less='less -r'
