kind of a funny sound system "problem"

i use alsa and i managed to have xmms output through DAC1 so i can hear other sounds from other programs.
but SOMETIMES, i can only hear one sound at a time. so i need to go to kde's sound system control thing and sometimes click default and apply, or sometimes change the sound server to alsa. i don't mind doing that every once in a while but it's kind of weird cause it seems really random. like i said, sometimes applying default settings work, and sometimes changing the sound server to alsa works. but the weirdest part is that after i leave the computer by itself for a while and come back, i hear only 1 sound at a time, and of course that's sometimes, too. i don't log off correctly most of the time (kde menu --> log out) and just forcequit x so that maybe why but it still doesn't make a lot of sense.

does anyone have/had a problem like this?
