Those of you who use XFCE probably know that there is a setting in the "Workspaces and margins" section that allows you to set the margins for the screen, so that when any window is maximized, it won't cover those margins. The description in XFCE looks like this: "Margins are area on the edges of the screen where no window will be placed".
Is there something similar in KDE? I looked up and down in the Control Center but I don't seem to be able to find it.

Thanks.
What you're looking for is in the Control Centre under Desktop--> Window-Specific-Settings.
You can apply a host of different settings for windows to retain their size, position, focus stealing etc, even when maximised.
If the window you want to control is not in the pre-defined list, you can either add it or display the window, then click on the icon in the top left of the titlebar and then select Configure window behaviour.

It seems I identified the particular setting I needed; in Control Center -> Desktop -> Window-Specific Settings -> Workarounds -> Maximum Size (set to 1000x900 so that when I maximize a window it won't fill the entire screen), and I declared this setting for all normal windows.
Now there is another issue: the maximize buttons dissapeared from all the windows. Even enabling "Use custom titlebar buttons positions" (under Window decorations) doesn't fix it. This is strange.
Also I don't know how to position a window when is maximized, so that the screen to always have a "clear" margin, let's say, on the left (not to be covered by any window). I could declare Geometry -> Position but that would apply to the windows no matter of their size, and I need it only for the maximized ones.
Well maybe I'm asking too much when I want KDE to behave like XFCE, I know.
