P1 laptop Damm Small Linux green screen

I'm trying to breathe new life into an old P1 laptop as a digital frame. It's an Inteva model number MP-983 and I just tried to run the DSL Live CD. It has booted up and the graphical environment has started but the screen is barely viewable and text just about impossible to read. There's a green tint and fine vertical lines over the entire display and it's about 50 pixels too long so the display falls off the lower edge of the monitor.

I'm not very experienced but know my way around and am happy to dive in if I could get some help. I first need to get to an environment where I can read anything I type.

Any ideas what i can try?

The inteva mp983 looks like a clone of the Chicony MP983 and it appears to have some issues as mentioned in this thread

Is it worth battling with DSL or is there another alternative?

Sorted!

For anyone else googling through

Hit f2 at the DSL splash screen and enter
dsl vga=788
answer boot questions and you should be good.

788 is what worked for me you might have to enter another code see this wiki entry for more details
