Screen size too small on 16" laptop

I just installed Suse 9.0 on my laptop (only a 1 cd installation). The laptop has a 16" screen, max refresh rate of 60Hz and 1280x1024 max res(i think). GRUB is fine full screen but the desktop only uses the middle part of the screen leaving a blank inch or so as a border unused. Any ideas?
The max resolution it allowed me to use was 1024x780 if i remember correctly.

I use suse 9.1 with 1280x800 just fine. Suse lets you customize your resolution if you want, I changed it while installing so I'm not exactly sure where you do it afterwards, probably in the control center somewhere. Eh probably wasn't much help oh well :/

I can alter my screen resolutio to e.g. 800*600 but it just makes the screen even smaller. I cannot access a higher resolution in order to fill the laptop's screen.
Any more ideas anyone???
