Installing applications on "Linspire"
Okay, I've read (Figures are completely accurate):
7 ReadMe-type files,
4 FAQs,
and 9 guides on how to do this, and NONE of them provided any simple help. I have no previous Linux experiance, and all of these expect that the reader DOES. Can ANYBODY, explain to me the way you'd explain to an idiot (As that is what I am) HOW ON EARTH you install a program on Linspire, after extracting it from the .tar archive?

first of all you have to extract the .tar files
tar -xf for streight tar files
tar -xzf for .tar.gz
tar -xjf for .tar.bz2
then you have to change into the program's directory (created by the extraction process) then run the above step.
if the .tar.gz is source
if it's a binary, then you'll have to run whatever installer program is provided

command console
it is a little bit difficult to adapt linux after windows...
before 6 months i was like u so i know what u want to learn..
open command console..(it should be in linspire start menu i am not using linspire)
than type "su" to become root and type your root password then enter the directory that .tar file extracted by using "cd directoryadress" you can copy directory adress from konqueror adress line.
then type
./configure && make
then type "make install" or "install all"
easy?

I use their CNR installer. $4.95 a month
1 click installation for over 2000 programs, most are free.
Very easy
You're not paying for the programs when you pay for CNR, you
are paying for an easy way to install them with one click,
the bandwidth, etc.
CNR - 15 day free trial
