Windows Longhorn style linux

(i dont know if this is a good spot so move it if it violates anything)

I was wondering if it would be possible to make linux act and function like windows longhorn without any windows code?. what desktop would be a good starting point (kde, gnome, lxde, xfce)

Hi...

Welcome to the forum

Just a thought (and a guess, I could be wrong) but depending on how similar or identical you would make it look, feel and act like Windows, I would imagine you would be getting a call from Microsoft.

Regards...

Something that might interest you:

Or maybe you just want a Windoze-like desktop theme ? I'm pretty sure someone has made one for each of KDE and GNOME and maybe even XFCE.

Please expand upon this.
As mentioned in above posts -- most DEs and window managers can be made to look and behave a lot like old Windows. this is just due to the flexibility available.
However, when you suggest making things function like Windows Vista you need to be a lot more specific. Do you want to run certain old games or do you want to experience a lot of bugs, for example?

You can make a Linux desktop that looks and acts like the Windows desktop.

You cannot make Windows act or feel like Linux under the hood. For example, you can't make Linux have a C:\ drive or be happy about file names that have spaces in them.

I don't remember exactly but 10 years ago there was a software which would make Windows desktop like linux DE's. And vice-versa too.

You'll have to install code which causes the system to randomly BSOD at the precise instant when you were reaching for the "Save" button.

What you're looking for is a desktop theme to simulate Longhorn (Windows Vista). There have been those:
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php...content=104232

....and there are probably others. As noted, though, it won't change what's under the hood. You can also get icon sets and customize your own desktop UI theme for Gnome or KDE to suit yourself. All it's going to do is make it LOOK like Vista.

Posting that you may have heard of something, ten years ago, doesn't help the OP much.
