What OS do MMORPG servers normaly run?

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering, what OS’s do most big MMORPG servers run? I heard that Final Fantasy XI runs off Solaris. Anyone know what some of the other big names like Everquest, Ultima Online, and etc. run? Is it mostly *nix based OS’s? Also, it was just too tempting to ask, would Microsoft’s Asheron’s Call be running off 2000 or 2003? I assume they would use their own OS.

Everquest runs on Linux/Apache. Get more details from Netcraft - they have a service which will tell you what a site is running and it's uptime.

Ok that's the webserver, but is that the game server? I don't know the addresses of the game server to check it with netcraft.
