Only me and BrianL are allowed to speak actual English. Especially since we're both North Westerners. The rest of speak some sort of strange language that sounds like, but isn't, English. I like to call it "foreign".
*ducks*
Yes. When I take over the world, everyone will have to learn to speak English with an Oldham accent. Summat like this here.
I would warn you that this may not be entirely true. My son who went out to China for 3 months a couple of years ago, to teach English advised that in the school he taught at he had 5 classes a day of 2000 students for each class. He reckoned that there are over 600 million Chinese learning English at any one time. That's got to be more than the USA.
@ XavierP - Since when has Kent been in the North West???? When in the IOM I am closer to Lancashire than I am to Kent when I'm in the IOW.
As a first language...
If you can't speak it well, you aren't counted.
Ever try to talk to a Chinese person on the phone?
Might as well not speak it at all...

Funny ... that's exactly my take on Americans!
So it's not about numbers all of a sudden? ;D

I'm mobile. I started in the NW and ended up in the SE. My accent is equally mobile - making me unintelligible to everyone.

And surely India is up there with many more English speakers?
I've never been able to decide if the English are always drunk or if they just speak that way. Maybe some day I'll choose to vacation somewhere that's cold, wet, and expensive for a vacation to find out....But probably not.
All colonials speak English funny. Fact of life gents. Goes for Aussies, Kiwis, Septics, the whole lot of you. Try and speak it in a normal fashion - just like someone from Cornwall or the Midlands.

There are many different English accents. For example, Oldham and Manchester are only about 6 miles apart, but the accents are totally different: theirs is funnier than ours.
