Vista Experience Rating 5.9 aero sluggish

I finally got a look at Microsofts new OS. I got my boss to pick up a copy of Vista Ultimate. As a computer tech I probably should have taken a look at learning Vista already but I have waited(read procrastinated) as long as possible.

I wanted to get the Ultimate version since I wanted to have all features available for support reasons. I initially installed using the onboard video. But since I didn't have support for "aero glass" I got my boss to pick up a cheap video card that would support it(radeon x1300). Ok so my overall rating is a 3.2. The aero subrating is at 5.9 and gaming index 4.2.

This is a P4 3ghz 1gb ram with the lowest subindex being the processor hence the 3.2 WEI.

I was impressed by a few of the improvements. For example installing our hp4000 network printer was a snap. Vista automatically searched our network for the printer and it installed easily.

The one thing that irks though is that even though I have a 5.9 subindex for aero, it seems to be extremley sluggish using the start menu. Everything else seems fine ie Flip 3d, minimizing and maximizing windows. But if I click on the start button -->all programs-->accessories(wait 5 seconds)-->any-other-sub-menu(wait 5 seconds). I just can't believe that this system even though its an older pentium 4 with slower ram is so sluggish.

I am un-wowed. oooooooh ahhhhh flip 3d big deal.

Sounds to me like you are your boss's boss

Big deal about the printer...any mainstread distro with KDE/GNOME and maybe an extra like Avahi will pick up network printers in no time.

Yeah my boss is scared of me. HAHA. He buys whatever I tell him to. I am the only technician working for a small computer company. I have total job security. I joke around with my wife about all the servers and companies we support and how I can shut them down at any time.

"Oh whats that you have to let me go? Sure no problem hold on."
Bzzzzzyoooo(sounds of servers shutting down via ssh script).

I am evil. I also haven't had a raise in 3 years.

Ahh... the classic recipe for an employee to go postal.

Heh, if your boss relies on you that much then no wonder he's afraid of you
