Thymox,

That is pretty neat! I have and still do study bionics and its related sciences as a hobby, and I would very much like to know where you got some of that info so i can look into it.

i'm not sure that minature pnuematic muscles would do the trick. but, they do have those neato watches that don't need batteries or winding - they turn regular motion into energy. i remember reading something about how they have tiny turbines that reach 5000 revs per second or something insane like that when you move your arm.
... course, i'd be kinda scared that it might blow up or something... what if it overloads if i move my arm too fast?

Stephanie (and all others that may be interested), I found most of the information by sheer perseverance (sp?) on Google and using Science Magazine's online journals (susbscription only... my Uni is a subscriber ). I can't remember all of the urls, but since I had to produce a CD (that contained all of the materials used) to work on any machine, internet connection or not, the articles in question are contained on it. I've uploaded an ISO of said CD to my site.

http://www.thymox.uklinux.net/prosthetics.iso (about 8Mb)

It's quite bland, but as my 'inspector' commented, "you don't need lots of colour when you have lots of information".

Enjoy.

(note: I think that I removed all external links, so I'm affraid the info held within is likely to be a task to find again!)

Now I have to ask how you know that, and why did you keep that kind of information even in your head?

Although, that is pretty cheap for an artifical muscle. Or maybe Prime meat is expensive. However you look at it... whatever.

i dunno i just know this stuff...acutally i read it in wired was surprised someone didnt already put it up...but people in my classes always ask how i know things that no one should like the fact that more than 40% of female japanese high school seniors complain of constupation adn 50% of 30 yr old japanese women (it came up in a discussion) or the policy of sweden on gun control while discussing the 5th amnendment...i guess this sort of stuff just gets stuck in my brain

random fact... if you stretch out all the skin on an average human body it would be really really painful for that person.
