Linux fun! Oh yea plenty of fun tweaking and making adjustments is fun. Learning VI (Mac/Unix text editor) and all the fun posts before me seem to represent fun... what more do we need? Here in the 'nix variant world we seem happily devoid of the BSOD blue screen of death doz stupid problem -reboot AGAIN! *sigh* But for all the games snop listed, isn't there any arcade around?

Hi all,

I'm the guy who started this thread. I thought that I'd get more answers than "tweking, programming, etc...". I find these enjoyable too but I was looking for something different.

We must admit that the "game scene" in linux is not yet as mature as in windows. Probably this is because linux is harder to configure than Windows. Another unmature thing are audio applications (and I mean composing). I've tried Rosegarden but it is far far away from, let's say, Cubase, Sonar (Cakewalk) or Logic audio. And there aren't good commercial applications too.

But don't get me wrong. I love to use Linux but I think that doing an standarization effort and create tools for configuring linux should be a must to "conquer the desktop"

Anyway, let's hope that future brings more and good games for linux (unreal series is really welcome). Also let's hope that some hardware companies put its eyes on linux and starts developing drivers for it as Nvidia does.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I completely disagree with statments like "use Playstation for gaming". I don't want to use a Playstation having a powerful system and a powerful operating system! I'd be wasting my money!

Bye

SnOp

Yah, releasing drivers like Nvidia. But unlike Nvidia, open source them as well. I still can't use my Linksys WPC11 v4 cause it's a realtek RTL8180L and they released a crappy closed source driver. And that shite Linuxant stuff jacks up my laptop. Plus if that driver was open source I could use my PCI wireless card that has the same chipset in linux.

Personally I don't like playing games, and I do not like those who play games either (i typed that just to be poetic, no offense ). I believe that television and computer games (including console games) are the plague of the 20. century, and will be haunting us even more in 21. century. Sometimes I wonder why there were so many great thinkers in the past, notably in the 1700s and 1800s. The only answer I can come up with is the lack of games. Imagine where we would currently be if only Newton was playing XBox instead of working on Calculus!

I enjoy reading man pages and the info reader. There are really great stuff there that nobody knows about. My favorite topics these days are sed, gawk, ed, octave and maxima. I also love to learn about the text editors, vi and emacs. And of course there is the mighty TeXbook waiting to be read! How can people think about gaming?!?

No offense, but you are dumb. Newton played games. Of course maybe not Xbox games, because they didn't exist back then, Einstein. The evolution of human technology took a huge step during the 20th century, so did amusement. It is normal to play games. Learning is also a step of human evolution. Imagine if Newton had access to UNIX! He would have been a wicked programmer!

I don't game either, but the story goes...

Link
Quote:
SPACEWAR aficionados formed the core of the early hacker culture at MIT. Nine years later, a descendant of the game motivated Ken Thompson to build, in his spare time on a scavenged PDP-7, the operating system that became Unix.
Unix and a PDP as an Atari 2600. Where would we be without SPACEWAR?

And I agree - most great thinkers approach their thinking with a game-like attitude - Einstein's thought-experiments, mathematical and logical 'games', chess. It's more about what kind of game and to what end, than games themselves.

I heard somewhere that the more advanced the mind, the more the need for games and play.

I certainly disagree. Before starting my answer though, I'd like to point out that you have just cursed me ( "dumb") . You also used the name of a notable scientist in a derogatory sense to mock me. Unfortunately such behaviors are rampant in this forum. I am sorry for you people who cannot create a decent sentence without swearing (the explanation is coming though).

Now let's think about what kind of games Newton was playing. What do you suppose he played? CounterStrike? Unreal? I know pretty well that those games didn't exist by then. My guess would be Chess or Go.

You said that evolution of technology also improved the world of amusement. Do you suppose that the intellectual level of games have improved for the better? Do you think that we would have such a "dumb" and irresponsible world if only kids were playing chess instead of cs?

While reading some threads, I have read one about a guy playing gnuchess. I can only bow in front of such honorable people. I will be bold enough to assert that such games as cs should be banned to people younger than 18. You may disagree.
