How you guys have fun on linux ?

I was wondering what does people do to have fun under linux.

Well, we all now that most of the games are only for windows (a pity, I know). However I've found some funny things to do under linux, so I'll post what I do and I would appreciate that people makes some more suggestions. So, here we go:

- I enjoy playing psx games using epsxe (www.epsxe.com). Specially Pro Evo. Soccer 2.

- Snes games are fine too and remind me the good old times... (You can find an excellent emulator at www.zsnes.com).

- I enjoy playing windows games, using WineX (www.transgaming.com), with my friends (they all use windows...). Medal of Honor is the one I mostly play. GTA vice city works great too.

- Some native linux games (Unreal Tournament 2003, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Frozen bubble...). I must say that there's a medal of honor client exec. for linux, but I prefer the windows exe/winex combo.

- I like watching films using xine (note: Xine comes by default with Slackware which I didn't know 'til I recently guessed that gxine is just a frontend. By the way, gxine exits if I try to watch something in fullscreen while xine works like a charm).

- Tv is great using Tvtime (tvtime.sourceforge.net).

- Last but not least what I enjoy most is tweaking the system (yeah, I know most of you will agree with this...). I don't know what happened to my since I installed slack: I try, most of the time, to make my system faster, more reliable and more beautiful...

Heh, I find software development to be fun and I use linux for this purpose a lot of the time. I also find helping people getting things working to be fun.

In general I use computers for work, and while I find my work is fun, at the end of the day I am quite happy to leave the office and do something that doesn't involve sitting at a computer. Things like going sailing, watching movies, going drinking with friends, or watching/playing sports:)

Computers aren't fun.. they're for work only..

Taking vacations away from computers is fun.. ;)

Trying to hack the gibson is always fun. mmmm Angelina Jolie. Tweaking and reading posts on LQ is always a blast. I've got a PS2 and Xbox for gaming, so other than CS, not much gaming. Web development is always fun too.

Yes, I agree and I forgot to mention that I find software and web development funny too.

But I thought I'll get more "exciting" purposes. And I specially disagree with "Computers aren't fun.. they're for work only.." (and I work as a programmer so I'm not using the computer just for fun). However I agree that taking vacations is fun... ;)

the greatest fun was (and i'm using linux sincd 1996) making things work, then making things work the way you want. nowdiays linux is just part of my life both at work and at home. i just have to say that it's becoming the great tool to make things done.

For fun I just surf source forge or freshmeat checking out some of the projects.
There are some great projects out there.

I enjoy software developement, and spend alot of my time reading various web sites. (The obvious sites, like /. and a few not-so-well known sites..) and waste more than half of my life on IRC!

As far as things off the computer, I enjoy reading Fantasy and Sci-Fi books.

LOL in other words, after I get my system all functional and working the way i want, there isnt much left to look forward to? I've often wondered about that... LOL

I guess it's the person who's using the PC's opinion on whether theyre fun, and IMHO, they are.

Tweaking and making my Slack machine work "perfectly" is fun and ADDICTIVE. THe next fun + work is to install Slackware (Slackintosh) on my brand new iBook. It would be a great combination. PowerPC G4 processor + Slackware. Of course time is a consideration.

The things that I do on my computer for fun are swaret --update & swaret --upgrade, recompile my kernel, read LQ!, and read about some of the HV devs. that I make (HV=High Voltage i.e. 15,000+ voils)

Off the computer: Work on my Martial arts, Care for my fish, and Build my HV devs. (right now I'm Building a jacobs ladder (climing ark) About 15,000 volts, Just think of what that could do to a cpu.

Fun on Linux is being able to fool around with computers and software in general.
Trying out LFS, setting up an old PC as a webserver, email, etc.
I fool with my server at home and an old Pentium at work that allows some VT terminals (so far 4, there are 8 ports available on the Digiboard) to do some useful functions not available on the main system.
I multi boot a number of systems on my main PC; a couple Linux distros, FreeBSD, Solaris, Windows 98 (eek!!!)...and maybe Plan9 sometime.
I have an old 486 that dual boots PTS DOS and Zipslack on a 200 MB drive.
Not as exciting as "real games", I know....

EDIT: Hey, I forgot to mention Xbill. Great to play for a laugh a couple times a year.

I mostly like plahying with emulators like ePSXe....I am a emulator guru ;)

for some damn reason, I find kStars very entertaining...just knowing where the different stars are gives me a kick :p

I like pulling up the KDE World Clock when involved in discussions with someone from another country.

I screwed up my ankle a few days ago and it's been snowing/sleeting/freezing-raining. So I've been messing with ~/.bash_profile, reading the bash man page and others, and playing xmms. Lately I've been tweaking the hell out of Ice (the window manager, not the weather) and, more generally, I've been doing dumb little shell scripts - trying to get good at it.

No, not most people's ideas of fun, but a shell and an editor and making stuff *happen* is fun to me. Linux is the most incredible command-line system in the universe. And the GUI ain't too shabby, either. ;)

Oh, yeah - DVDs are fun. I don't have a player - something I can only do on my box.

And a piece of mozilla chrome - freecell. No need for Windows at all. :D

I'm not a gamer. I don't think I've played any of these games people always talk about. I used to play Galaga a lot but I found myself getting too pissed and didn't want to risk the health of my box. I've already had to switch keyboards since I broke one. ;) Damn 45th level is impossible. I got past it once, iirc, but that's it.

Anyway - and there's always surfing, with LQ being a (the?) major part of that.

But, yeah - shell scripts. *lol*
