Thumbs up Age + GUI's

Amen to that Almar2!!
Could not have put it better... re cars & trains.
I am at present using Freespire which seems to work well, it has good software installation and seems to be the answer for me at this time.

I have tried Mandriva... and tried to install Fedora but it screwed my Pc so as I had to re install everything I have left it alone.
Thanks for the input Mikyboi.
Happy New year All.
Geofrs

ONT=Times New Roman]Thanks for your insight mikyboi. Of course I can drive most any car now. I wasn't born with an inate ability to drive cars....but I can hardly take my present car-driving knowledge and abilities and port them to engineering a freight train the day after tomorrow (they're both vehicles, right?).

But if I really wanted to drive that freight train, I wouldn't give up, just as I'll not give up trying to get linux to work for me and my dust-gathering PCs.

The debian CDs are trashed and I've installed a distro called ArkLinux. The install went smoothly with a couple of bumps, but the thing did install!

So onwards and onwards! With the help of people who frequent sites like this, I have no doubt I will get it anyway.
Of course, if this site is any indication, Linux can take over the gaming consoles too, after it finishes the minor detail of "konquering" Windows.

Sorry for the bad pun, but I just couldn't help it.

absolute clincher for Linux

Sure you heard about the 14,000 computers in Munich, Germany!

Awesome fact from the internet...concerning the Chinese:

A rumor in China was circulated that MS had built backdoors into all their software.

Add to that fact obvious commie paranoia! Even if it is not true, think of the impact of unfounded fear!

Hence, open software would really be popular since having the source would allow

the Chinese to check for backdoors!

Even if it is not true, think of the impact of unfounded fear!

I have joked for years that in China, there are only 5 legal copies of XP Prof.

Their culture does not perceive the concept of copyright.

Hence the trade imbalance!

Linux is exploding but add to it the pressure from millions of people in China!

Fedora Core 6 has standard mono allowing compilation of C#.

simple

>mcs whatever.cs

Haven't checked lately but mono doesn't like C# .NET 2.0 things like generics!

Fun!

My mother had a saying:
"Old age is a question of mind over matter---If you don't mind, then it doesn't matter!!"
My version: "Age is an attitude"
I am about to retire after 38 years in Aerospace. I fully intend to spend the next 38 improving the world--partly be teaching people about SW choices.

Motorola and age

I read in some journal (when they were in paper)

what the CEO of Motorola said

"our young managers don't like having older persons working for them"

(1) the execs hire managers they like (perhaps for strange reasons)
(2) the young BSers are at a meeting releasing their useless BS and thinking

"I'll bet the old guys are not buying this tripe" so they feel uneasy

The military send 17-22 year old men into combat ! Why?

Nobody else would swallow the absolute stupidity of the bureaucrats/brass who run the thing!

Most of our troops in Iraq are busy with bureaucracy God Bless them!

Send me! I'll stay on bomb run (IAP to AP) not thinking about my kids or OL!

I never lost any wars!...only the bureaucrats can do that!

I remember WWII history and the island of Peleliu(sp)!

The GIs needed water so some IDIOTs put water in barrels formerly containing gasoline.

Almost all the GIs got sick!

keeping Win XP Prof

Linux has greatly improved since 1997 when I started using it but...

yum update just started acting up after months of perfect operation

so it will be years before I discard Win XP Prof.

I love MS Outlook Express in spite of its problems.

There is another thread on something like "why keep the dual boot"

I just turned 34, living outside Oslo, Norway, and I am male.
Now I'm using Suse 10.1 (Firefox 2.0, Evolution, Gnome, Compiz) on my Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pro lap top. Before this I was happy with Mepis.
I am a happy user.

Turned 100% towards Linux early last year!
Never again windows!

Norway is not a good place to be in the wintertime ;(
