I'm developing a linux 2.6 based product which has multiple application. I'm handling the Application Development part.

Many of the applications need to communicate with each other. For this, I'm using MAILBOX. Everthing is fine when there are about 16 mailboxes. When I try to increase it to 19 though, some of the mailbox creation fails. During every trial run, a different mailbox fails to create.

I'm not able to understand the situation. Can anyone please explain the cause of this sort of behaviour ?

Sounds like you need to invest time debugging the app?

I've got the solution to my problem. I was actually exceeding the max number of mailboxes for my system (defined by default to 16). I increased it and everything worked smoothly.

To do this:
[1]. Open the file "/etc/sysctl.conf".
[2]. Set an appropriate value for "kernel.msgmni" and reboot.
ie. kernel.msgmni = X, where X=required number of mailboxes.
[3]. Run the command "ipcs -l" to see the new limits.
