Unhappy failed to create a file system..... ??

I have tried to install xubuntu onto an unbranded PC with 40GB hard drive, AMD 1.6 processor.
When installing it gets to 50% then brings up a window that says :

'the ext3 file system creation in partition #1 of IDE1 master (hda) failed'

What does this mean? What can I do to finish loading xubuntu onto the PC?

Almost sounds like the hard drive is failing. You could try pre-partitioning the system. Boot a live CD and then use GParted to partition the disk. Then try installing Xubuntu.
