cisco help

i just got me a new cisco 2950 switch to rplace my old 3com beast, but i am having a few problems...

i connected via console and ran the setup bit, but now i have 2 problems,

1. i cant connect to it via the ip i set, now in the setup it asked me to pick an interface and assign an ip to it, is that the ip i should be connecting on, and does my computer have to be attatched to that port.

2. i keep getting this
00:22:17: %IP_SNMP-3-SOCKET: can't open UDP socket
00:22:17: Unable to open socket on port 161

i dont want snmp just yet, and i tried turning it off with no snmp-server and it just crashed the system.

anyone a cisco boffin with a few mins to spare? bit of a when it comes to cisco gear

Joel112,

I'm no guru, but I do know a little more than the basics on some Cisco products, however I can't promise that I'll be able to answer every question you have.

#1 Yes, the interface and IP address you set in the setup would be the one you connect to. I would recommend a x-over cable (if possable) if it's and ethernet connection you set up. If in the setup you set eth0 up as 192.168.1.1 then you would telnet into 192.168.1.1 and from there you should be able to start to configure your switch.

#2 What are you doing to get this message?

how did you do a factory reset?

It says on the Cisco website to use different commands, but I cannot access the switch as it is unable to open this socket on port 161.
