Minicom to Cisco

I have been up and down google and this forum, and still can't get minicom to connect to cisco equipment using a typical cisco rollover cable connected to the serial port on my laptop. OS is RH9. Works fine using Hyperterm (Win2k dual boot). Here is what I have done:

- Connected rollover cable to console port on Cisco switch and serial port of laptop.
- $ sudo minicom -s
- selected "Serial port setup"
- set serial device to /dev/ttyS0 (also tried S1, S2, S3, S4)
- set BPS/Par/Bits to 9600 8N1
- set hardware and software flow control to "no"
- selected "save setup as dfl"
- slected "exit from minicom"
- restarted minicom using "$ sudo minicom"
- hit enter, space, etc. a bunch of times after the modem finishes initializing to try and wake up the connection.

No Luck. Am I missing something? Thanks.

hey there,

last time i had to modify initttab to enable /dev/ttyS0 in order to get minicom enabled for using the serial port...and i also used the following options for modem init and dial settings (you can set these options in minicom if you start minicom with -s ):
~^M~

hope this helps,
-E

Well, it turns out that some IBM ThinkPads (mine is a A22m) turn off the serial port in the BIOS by default. Win2k enables the serial port during boot, but RH 9 does not. After I enabled the serial port in the BIOS, minicom worked like a charm.
