whenever i'm on LQ, i check the "Distributions" forum. a lot of the time there are "i want a distro that will do x, y, and z" threads. that's fine with me, but when i scroll down to see all the replies, it becomes just a "best distro" thread like all the rest.

for example, i just recently saw one that was like "i want a distro that's easy to use and configure out-of-the-box." i scrolled down, and someone replied with "use slackware, it's secure and stable" even though the OP didn't have security or stability listed as a criteria. and other people were just throwing out names of distros without explanations or anything - i don't think they read the question or something.

is it just me or is this funny?

slackware can do x, y, and z, and even a little w but yeah i do agree. people are very biased to their own distro, and im no different

like fedora -- kde does not support mp3 etcetc,u need to compile ur own

yeah, but i mean a lot of the time only one person out of the 10 or 20 that post actually answers the original question.

Everyone basically does little but recommend their own distro.... the threads are generally a little pointless anyway so i'm not likely to lose sleep over them not getting an answer. if there was a "best" linux then the 1,000 others wouldn't exist....

Unfortunately, I notice that any post at all can become a "best distro" thread.
One might wonder which is the stronger urge. For newbies to want to have others tell them what they need by conclusively stating which distribution is the best or for current Linux users to interject "the distro I am using is the best" into every thread they see.
I know I am put off when I see the only advice to a real question is to "switch distros".
This is occasionally appropriate, but not as often as I see it posted.
Consider this. Would you seriously suggest that your distribution is best for everyone under all circumstances?
It almost seems that we are on a quest for the Holy Grail. The one true Linux distro.

I'm just about all Slackware, except the heavy Redhat usage at work but I actually find myself telling people which distro for them to use, I recommend Fedora most of the time if they are very new to Linux, etc.
