Newbie Fedora 2 question

Not only new to Fedora but new to the Linux experience as a whole.

I recently downloaded Fedora Core 2.

Installed workstation option on a Duron 400, used the test for all installation cd's, they all passed. I installed, got message to remove media and restart. Got to bootloader screen and chose Fedora to run (was the only installed OS, this is another pc btw ). I see all these things that are done and get an [OK] thingie at the end (don't know if this is normal) and I end up in kernel 2. something. No linux, just User login: . After some advice I login with root and rootpasword. I try startx... nothing. I do cd.. and go to the directory with the actual /dev /etc ... folders (the other was just called root but wasn't actually the root I believe?) there startx doesn't work either. I can do pretty much all the Unix thingies I know but startx isn't recognized by the batch. Do I need to start up another shell first or what? Better to reinstall maybe?

Did the X config during install go OK? Sounds like something messed up. You can check in /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any reported errors. You can also try re-configing with "system-config-display".

I noticed at the very end I have one Red message (probably not ok then) but it jumps to the login screen to fast to be able to read what it was. I have looked for /var/log/Xorg.0.log but in /var/log I can't find any Xorg.0.log... (ls -a)

I'm gonna do a fesh reinstall with desktop setting, maybe that'll fix 'r ...

keep you updated

Tried to reinstall two times now but with each I get stuck at something that says

Grub:

which can do only some bash commands and can't do startx either (no ls or anything either)

I think I'm better off trying another distro?
Anyone have some advice on which might be best for a duron 400?

Try Red Hat 9.0 it's easy to install make sure you create a bootdisk during install. This is done at the screen that tells you to s=choose a bootloader (ie GRUB of LILO), just check the box trhat says make bootdisk.
To a newbie RH 9.0 is the same as fedora without the install and dual boot probs.
