monitor hangs after x-window load during instal

when i try to install fedora 6 it doesn't recognize my video card (ATI Radeon X550XT)
and the monitor hangs after anaconda load, detect video card (ati technologies unidentified model ...) load x-window system then the monitor hangs

i tried install with no hardware detection and with skipccd (skip monitor detect) as it says in the install instructions at the boot screen and it doesn't work
never had this problem with fc4 and fc5

i got i to work
i switched from x64 to i386 and it worked (i have an x64 processor)

Use the text install then. It's all the same, you just won't get graphical setup screens but a command-line based ones, with nice BIG OK-buttons etc. after the setup you can configure your video card if you know what it is and what specs it has.

EDIT: on the older RedHats and I believe older Fedoras too this was achieved by typing linux text at the install disc boot prompt. It is said in the instructions, though.

From your question I cannot tell if X was installed. Issuing the command startx should start up X.

If it works, then you need to change your startup from init 3 to init 5

If it blocks, try to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the line with

driver = "xxxxx" # for your ati card

to driver = "vesa"

and retry startx

Thats my take on the problem.
