Install of Fedora 13 with EVGA GT 240 video gard only 800 x 640
Hi,
I just upgraded from Fedora 12 to Fedora 13.
Screwed up the grub, but that's a different issue.
I was able to boot into the new Fedora 13.
But resolution is only 800 x 600.
The only other option is 640 x 480.
I'm using an HDMI connection.
This was working fine in F12.
If I switch back to VGA connection, it won't load KDE at all.
F13 with GeForce 240 video card, resolution too small
Ok So I got a step ahead.
I found that that its using vesa driver. I installed some pkgs (don't remember name exactly but it was something with display settings) and I now I have Display settings in my KDE. I'd much prefer to do all this in command line to know what's being changed, but couldn't find online what needs to be changed.
In display settings I changed the monitor to be 1920x1200, but when I apply the settings the relogin, it goes back to LCD Panel 1024x768.
This is a 24 inch panel (which obviously support higher resolution than 1024x768 cause I had it running like this before in F12.
I changed the video card driver to use nVidia Corporation GT215 [GeForce GT240] and now I have a better resolution of 1280x800, but this is still too small.
I tried Nouveau driver, but it screwed up the colours so bad, I had to boot from DVD and modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf back to Vesa driver, cause I couldn't tell what I'm changing, but resolution was high.
Any ideas on what driver exactly I should be using and what settings for monitor?
The HorizSync and VertRefresh I found somewhere online.
The screen looks better,as now I can get 1280x800.
But I can't seem to go any higher than this.
How do I make the resolution higher than this?
Why is this such a problem in FC13? It was fine in FC12
Here's the xorg.conf file I use with my Soyo 20" display. Can't get the native 1680x1050 without it. I determined the appropriate modelines by running gtf
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 400, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1280x1024 76.0*
1280x800 0.0
1024x768 76.0
800x600 73.0
640x480 73.0
640x400 0.0
320x400 0.0
Which I understand that the highest it reports is 1280x1024.
I checked the grub menu.lst and nomodeset was in there.
I tried booting without it, and at first it looked like it was gonna boot, and then it froze with some weird obscure error about a Wind Webcam (I don't have a webcam). Had to reset computer.
Hence still no luck. I tried settings from the xorg that RockDoctor provided, but X wouldn't boot at all.
F13 is really unlucky for me.
All of this was working great in F12.
I actually used the on-board video card and then bought this GT240 board, and it transitioned perfectly without me having to fiddle with settings.
In F13 I can't get this to work. I think I've tried everything (obviously except something that will make this work for me)
The maximum resolution of your monitor as reported by xrandr may be incorrect. Mine was, and still is. I had to look up my monitor's specs to see what frequencies were appropriate, then used gtf to generate the modelines within those specs.
In last few days I learned some more informations about new Xorg. It seams that it can run totally without xorg.conf file. In order to create one you need to logout from GUI and then run Xorg --configure (if I remember correctly. Then you can use that as the base for fine tuning.
