Unhappy Only 800 x 600 and 640 x 480 in GNOME

Ugh, I can't get GNOME to go into any other resolutions except 800 x 600 and 640 x 480. The funny thing is that my terminal (on boot and when I exit GNOME) is running perfectly in 1024 x 786. I looked through my XFree86Config file and saw that 1024 x 768 is in there...but it must be ignoring that or something. Any ideas on what I can try?

Is the monitor you selected say capable of 1024x786, when this happens to me I just change the monitor to "generic monitor 1024x786" or whatever it says.

The best thing to do regarding your monitor is to find out its exact horizontal and vertical refresh rates. If you still have the manual, they should be in there; if not, a google search will probably find them for you. Run xf86config, and when it asks for horizontal and vertical rates, type in the range that your monitor supports.

Be careful - don't guess, or enter bogus values. Your monitor can explode.

I found this in a PDF document for my Thinkpad, if you do a search for "Get Refresh Rate Capability" on this file:

http://www.enderak.com/linux/thinkpa...cs/600tech.pdf

it comes up with some values...though I don't know which to use (and I'm hesitant to damage the LCD).
